Niagara Falls

9th October 2014

We had a good nights sleep at our B&B and were treated to a three course breakfast, which left most of us immobile for the next hour or so. Nevertheless, we waddled up tour rooms and prepared ourselves for another days sightseeing. Todays plan is to drive to Niagara Falls (not too far away) and later on explore the town and surrounds.

Once again. it is a beautiful sunny day, and almost warm, eventually warming up to T shirt weather.

The drive along the Niagara Parkway to the falls is very scenic, and there are wall to wall vineyards along the road. We are a bit surprised at the number of wineries in this area.

Arriving at the falls, we park at the far end of the carpark, not far from the rapids above the falls, so we decide to wander over to the waterfront there and work our way downstream. The mist from the falls is very heavy, and it is impossible not to get a bit wet, whilst trying to get the best photos.

To complete the tourist experience, we do the behind the falls walk, where you get to go underground to about halfway down the falls where they have tunnelled in behind the falls, in two places and have a viewing platform along side the falls. Whilst ponchos are provided, the water spray is so strong, you can't stay in it for very long, and getting a good photo without drowning your camera is almost impossible. We had our point and shoot waterproof camera, but even then it was challenging.

It was hard to keep the water drops off the lens

Following this, we walked down the riverside for a while, until we could get the falls in frame for a couple of photos. There were Chinese and Japanese tourists everywhere.

Having seen the falls we drove a bit further up the upstream side and stopped briefly at a scenic little reserve, Dufferin Island, on the other side of the road for a toilet stop and quick look around.

On the road back to Niagara on the Lake, we made a few stops to get a few photos, but were soon back in town, for a better chance to look around in daylight. We stopped down by the lake and could see Toronto in the Distance and Fort Davis on the USA side just across the water from where we were.

The township was busy with tourists, but well worth a wander around. The girls seemed more interested in checking out the shops than David and I were, so we retired to a little "English" pub, The Angel Inn, to test the local brew.

After a bit of a rest at the B&B we went out to a restaurant recommended by our host, hoping for a better experience than last night. The Grill on King turned out to be a very good choice, and we had a most enjoyable meal, and lively discussion with our Bangladeshi waiter. We also uncovered another four Aussies sitting at an adjoining table. They were from Avalon, would you believe.

Off to Quebec in the morning, so a good nights sleep is in order and we retired to bed at a respectable time.
