A Glimpse of Grand Cayman

25th October 2014

Just when we thought HAL had finally got everything back on track, we arrived at our anchor point at Grand Cayman , just ahead of time at a bit after 7.30am their time.  Grand Cayman is the only tender port on our reduced cruise itinerary.

Soon after arrival, the Captain announced on the  PA that conditions at the tender berth on shore were rough and we may not be able to land people on shore. After a few exploratory trips, the Captain made the decision that it was too dangerous to take passengers ashore as there was a 1 m swell at the tender berths (apparently there are 3 possible berths and none are safe), we are told that there are waves breaking over the wharfs.

Note the sea state that stopped us landing at Grand Cayman !!!!!!

In the meantime, we are standing off the shore in a very calm sea with about 0.5m of swell. The only conclusion you can make is, if that is the landing facilities they have here, totally unprotected from a pretty friendly sea, then cruise ships probably don’t come here much. We are a stone’s throw away from Jamaica , what a shame that wasn’t on our agenda.

Anyway, now a master at apologizing, the Captain announces that we are heading back out to sea, and will be heading for, we presume Cartagena. All we know at this stage is that we have another at sea day. Most people are less than happy, but I guess the Captain had no choice.

In the meantime the cruise director is scrambling to put together some sort of program for the day that will appease the increasingly unsettled crowd. Who knows what new disaster lies ahead of us.

The curse of the Veendam continues !!!!!!
